Common Skilled Trades questions

Tap a question to see what the interviewer is really listening for.

  1. What they're listening for: They want specifics — equipment, voltages, materials, years. Name the machines and processes you've actually run instead of a general 'I've done it all'.

Industry tips

Electrical, welding, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, warehouse and construction crews.

  • Bring your own hand tools even if the shop supplies them — it shows you're ready to work on day one.
  • Carry copies of your certifications and licenses. Cards with dates beat a promise to email them later.
  • Lead with safety in every answer about the work itself. Trade employers screen for it before they screen for skill.
  • Quantify your work: square footage, units per day, crew size, tonnage, service calls per week. Numbers get remembered.
  • Be straight about what you haven't done yet, then name the closest thing you have done.
  • Ask about tool allowances, PPE provided, per-diem and how travel time is paid — those decide whether the offer works for you.
  • Show up 15 minutes early in work boots with your hard hat ready. The walk from the parking lot is part of the interview.
